Neck and chin liposuction, or fat removal beneath the chin, is an operation we perform to address fat that accumulates in this area. You can consult us about fat that remains here despite diet and exercise. We remove localized excess fat with liposuction to adjust its distribution beneath the chin.

We perform this procedure in women and men for localized contouring. During the consultation, you can explain what you would like to change about the area under your chin. We describe the extent of the fat-removal plan based on your expectations and the structure of your neck.

What causes fullness beneath the chin?

Fat beneath the skin, loose skin, and jaw structure can all contribute to the appearance of a double chin. Liposuction works within the fat layer beneath the skin. In a neck with pronounced excess skin, the condition of the skin covering the fat is considered alongside the amount of fat when choosing a method.

The position of the chin affects the transition between the chin and neck. A recessed chin can make this transition look short even when there is little fat. Liposuction does not change the shape or position of the jawbone, so the bone structure is assessed separately during the profile examination.

The platysma is a thin muscle layer beneath the skin at the front and sides of the neck. Its edges may become visible as vertical neck bands. Fat deposits, sagging skin, and muscle bands can occur in the same person, so necks that look similar externally may need different tissues to be addressed.

Fat beneath the chin lies both above and below the platysma. Standard chin liposuction targets the superficial fat layer above the muscle. Prominence of the tissues beneath the muscle is a separate anatomical issue from superficial fat removal.

Salivary glands and other neck structures also contribute to the shape beneath the chin. A localized lump that can be felt, unlike widespread fat deposits, may need to be investigated. In that situation, the cosmetic plan takes shape after the source of the fullness is understood.

Who is a candidate for chin liposuction?

Liposuction may be an option when there is a noticeable fat deposit beneath the chin and sufficient skin elasticity. Skin elasticity is the ability of skin to return to its original shape after being stretched. Even necks with the same amount of fat may differ in skin thickness and looseness, so the limits of the procedure are determined during the examination.

A thin layer of fat beneath the chin may be accompanied by pronounced excess skin or platysma bands. Removing fat in this situation does not address the other structures contributing to the appearance. Rather than deciding on liposuction from age, weight, or a silhouette in a photograph alone, the tissue responsible for the fullness is identified.

Liposuction is not intended for weight loss. If substantial weight changes are continuing, neck fat distribution and the overlying skin may also change. A stable weight is a suitability criterion that helps define the boundaries of the area to be contoured.

Previous fat removal, lifting, or injection procedures on the neck are part of the medical history reviewed during the examination. You can share which areas were treated. Pregnancy, an active local skin condition, or an uncontrolled general illness may require postponing the cosmetic procedure and investigating that condition first.

Fat distribution beneath the chin may differ from distribution elsewhere in the body. Someone who is satisfied with their overall weight may still want to discuss a particular fullness under the chin. In that case, instead of choosing a procedure based on body weight, the examination establishes whether there is excess neck fat and how the skin covers the area.

Examination of the neck and jawline

Front and side views with the head in a natural position help reveal the arrangement of tissues beneath the chin. Raising the chin can stretch the skin, while tilting the head forward can emphasize folds. Describing the posture in which you notice the appearance in a photograph helps relate the examination findings to your expectations.

A hands-on examination provides information about the thickness of the fat layer and where it is concentrated. A fold held between the fingers contains both skin and the fat beneath it. The size of that fold therefore cannot directly measure how much fat can be removed.

The relationship of platysma bands to head position and muscle movement helps distinguish the contributions of muscle and fat to the appearance. Tissue sagging from the jawline toward the neck can also change the scope of the plan. If lower facial tissues have shifted, options for the facial support tissues may be considered alongside a procedure focused beneath the chin.

Fat may be concentrated in the middle of the neck or extend along the sides of the jawline. Its distribution on the right and left may also differ. Marking the central fullness and the transitions at the sides separately shows where the cannula will work.

Photographs can show the general shape of the profile and jawline. Skin elasticity, the thickness of the fat layer felt by hand, and the structure of deeper tissues require a hands-on examination. Close-up framing, lighting, and head angle can change the silhouette, so a preliminary consultation based on photographs does not replace this examination.

After weight loss, a skin fold may remain prominent even if volume beneath the chin has decreased. The examination distinguishes how much of the fold that can be grasped is fat and how much is skin. In a neck with a limited fat layer, explaining the need for a lift helps clarify which tissue liposuction would reach.

Fat removal and the incision site

Through a small incision beneath the chin, we apply ultrasonic energy, which uses sound waves, to the fat tissue. We then suction out the fat through fine cannulas, or small fat-removal tubes. We close the entry point with a dissolvable suture.

The cannula reaches the fat layer beneath the skin through the entry point under the chin. Markings made before surgery show where fat is concentrated and the transitions to neighboring areas. Central fat deposits and fat extending along the jawline create different working areas, so the entry site and the internal target area are separate concepts.

In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, sound waves are applied to the fat tissue, and suction removes the fat. In conventional suction-assisted liposuction, fat is removed directly with cannulas. These names describe how fat is processed and do not, on their own, define the extent of any procedure on the neck skin or muscle.

Chin liposuction can be planned under local anesthesia, which numbs the treatment area, or general anesthesia. Adding a neck lift or other facial procedures to work beneath the chin affects the choice of anesthesia. General health, current treatments, and previous experiences with anesthesia are also part of this plan.

Horizontal lines on the neck surface are a separate feature from the fat layer reached by the cannula. If the lines are what you primarily wish to change, mentioning this during the consultation helps clarify the change you expect from fat removal. Liposuction targets localized excess fat beneath the skin.

Plasma skin tightening

If the tissue structure is suitable, we can add plasma skin tightening to a neck and chin liposuction plan. We use our J-Plasma and argon plasma devices for this purpose. We explain the need for fat removal and tightening separately, based on the amount of fat and the looseness of the neck skin.

Plasma is ionized gas. In these treatments, controlled heat energy is delivered to the connective tissue beneath the skin with the aim of contracting collagen fibers. Collagen is a protein that gives connective tissue its structure, and the treatment tip reaches beneath the skin through small entry points.

Plasma treatment works on connective tissue beneath the skin, while surgical lifting can remove excess skin and reposition tissues. Pronounced excess skin or a need to address the platysma muscle changes the purpose for which these options are used. Whether liposuction entry points can also be used for plasma treatment is part of the surgical plan.

When is a face and neck lift considered?

A face and neck lift may be considered when there is pronounced sagging of the neck skin, platysma banding, and downward displacement of lower facial tissues. This operation addresses the skin, supporting tissues, and the platysma muscle when needed. If there is also excess fat, liposuction may be part of the same plan.

Depending on the extent of the lift, incisions are planned in the folds around the ear and in the area extending behind it. A separate incision beneath the chin may be needed to reach the muscle in the middle of the neck. The small entry point for the fat-removal cannula and the lift incisions provide access to different tissues.

Chin liposuction and buccal fat removal (bichectomy) target different fat compartments. In buccal fat removal, the fat pad inside the cheek next to the chewing muscles is accessed through the mouth. Chin liposuction reaches superficial neck fat from beneath the chin. Whether facial fullness refers to the cheek, jawline, or area beneath the chin therefore changes the choice of method.

Planning with other procedures

We can perform neck and chin liposuction on its own or within the same plan as body liposuction or other facial operations. If you are considering changes to areas beyond the chin, you are welcome to share those during the consultation too.

Chin surgery and chin liposuction address different structures in the profile. A chin procedure targets bone position or volume in that area, while liposuction targets fat distribution beneath the skin. When a recessed chin and fat beneath the chin occur together, these options may be considered in a combined plan.

In a combined surgical plan, the area for fat removal, the area of excess skin, and the site of muscle adjustment are marked separately. Identifying which of these structures contributes to the appearance of the jawline explains the scope of each procedure. Incisions and entry points are selected to reach the tissue to be treated.

Frequently asked questions

How is fat removed with chin liposuction?

Through a small incision beneath the chin, we apply ultrasonic energy, which uses sound waves, to the fat tissue. We then suction out the fat through fine cannulas, or small fat-removal tubes.

Can men have neck liposuction?

We can also perform liposuction for fat deposits in the neck and under the chin in men. As in women, the aim is to remove localized excess fat beneath the chin.

Can chin liposuction be combined with other cosmetic surgery?

Yes, it can be included in the same plan as body liposuction or other facial cosmetic surgery. You can tell us which areas you would like to change during the consultation.

Does chin liposuction also address sagging skin?

Liposuction targets the fat layer beneath the skin. If excess skin is pronounced, a separate procedure involving skin removal or repositioning may be considered.

Are vertical neck bands fat deposits?

Vertical bands may be related to the thin neck muscle called the platysma. Muscle prominence with movement and the distribution of fat beneath the chin are examined as separate findings.

Can chin liposuction and plasma treatment be planned together?

When the tissue structure is suitable, we can add plasma treatment to a liposuction plan. We use our J-Plasma and argon plasma devices for skin tightening.

Should I consider chin liposuction or a neck lift?

Liposuction may be considered for excess fat beneath the skin, while a neck lift may be considered for pronounced skin sagging and a need to adjust the muscles. If these findings occur in the same neck, fat removal can be included in the lift plan.

Where is the incision for chin liposuction?

A small entry point is made beneath the chin for the fat-removal cannula. Incisions extending around the ears may be part of other tissue adjustments, such as a face and neck lift.

What type of anesthesia is used for chin liposuction?

The procedure can be planned under local or general anesthesia. The choice depends on the extent of the area for fat removal, additional procedures, and general health.

Is liposuction suitable if there is little fat under my chin?

If there is little fat, the cause of the appearance under the chin needs to be identified. When excess skin, muscle bands, or the position of the jawbone are prominent features, fat removal does not address those structures.

I live abroad. What is the first step for chin liposuction?

If you wish, you can start with an online preliminary consultation. Sharing photographs and explaining what you would like to change beneath your chin helps Op. Dr. M. Hakan Bulam with the initial review.

How much does neck liposuction cost?

The cost of neck liposuction is determined at the consultation, based on the planned procedure.
